Fishing in Garrett County waters is one of the area's most exciting and rewarding sports. Garrett County holds eight of the Maryland State Records. Maryland's free fishing days are the first two Saturdays in June and July 4.

Fly Fishing
All state record trout were caught in Garrett County: brook trout - 6lbs 1.75oz, in the North Branch of the Potomac; brown trout - 18lbs 3oz, in the North Branch of the Potomac; cutthroat trout - 7lbs 9oz, in the North Branch of the Potomac and rainbow trout - 14lbs 3oz in the Savage River Reservoir.

Ice Fishing
Increasingly, ice fishing has become a favorite winter pastime on Deep Creek Lake and Savage River Reservoir. The best months are January and February. The Garrett County Ice Fishing Contest, sponsored by Deep Creek Outfitters and the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce runs until the county lakes are no longer frozen. The contest is open to everyone and fish must be caught in Garrett County waters. Register your catch at Deep Creek Outfitters at 1899 Deep Creek Drive in McHenry and you may be a weekly winner!

Hunting & Trapping
Areas open to the public include Me. Nebo Wildlife Management Area, Deep Creek Lake State Park, Garrett State Forest, Potomac State Forest and Savage River State Forest. These combine to make a total of over 80,000 acres of public hunting land maintained by the State.

Boating
Garrett County Offers three beautiful lakes for motorboats and personal watercraft. Deep Creek Lake extends 12 miles and has a surface of 3,900 acres with 65 miles of shoreline. The Youghiogheny River Lake extends 16 miles and covers 2,840 acres. Jennings Randolph Lake extends five and one-half miles upstream and has a surface area of 952 acres.
