Garrett County has more acres of publicly owned land than any other county in the state. With no county-wide zoning, about 91% or 383,065 acres of Garrett County are assessed as agricultural lands. State parks, forests, and wildlife management areas assist in the preservation of approximately 20% of that total acreage.
With so much protected forestland, Garrett County is one of only two counties in the state that have been exempted from the Forest Conservation Act.
The air is so clean that vehicle emissions testing is not necessary.

Recycle your Christmas tree free this January & February at the Oakland Landfill located at Weber Rd and at the Grantsville Refuse & Recycling Site on Route 40.
Bike, canoe or kayak your way around the county! Not only is it great
for the environment, it’s also terrific exercise. There are hundreds of
miles of biking trails or paddle your way across Deep Creek Lake to
your next destination! During the winter months, snowshoe or
cross-country ski your way to your next locale.
